Career advices from Yaniv Garber
*Applies for commercial/feature animation
-showreel content: 2 main categories need be included-creature(quadruped)and performance
-showreel around 1 minute, polished works only
1 minute of high quality animation is better 5min of okay stuff
People are gonna look at your worst stuff, simple animation is okay, can be as basic as a walk cycle as long as it’s polished.
-Still needs linkedin ( companies to look at:blue zoo/jellyfish/framestore)
-Find a mentor to look at your reel
-Software: any big company will work with Maya, but Blender is coming up too
-Freelancing vs contract
Freelancing pays more(not that much more)and has perks, contract doesn’t mean stable, Yainv only gets 6 months contract every time woking at MPC
-Time management
dont overwork and try to impress, be open about your work progress, communication is good, most corporate ppl are nice, befriend with them
sometime when a shot is hard, just talk to ppl to say you need more time.
-Networking events: london.siggraph.org/events (social skill: just be normal, be open about your work don’t get defensive most animators are shy)
-Good entry level showreel example: https://youtu.be/mI_OjDMsMXE?si=R-PgnQL9OFdKCfzR
-Don’t waste time on modeling and rigging, just buy rigs online
